MICHAEL T. CARTON

Michael T. Carton is a member of the firm and head of the firm’s Personal Injury and Workers’ Compensation practice.  He has extensive experience appearing in state and federal courts representing injured persons and their families, and regularly handles complex litigations from inception through trial.  Mr. Carton has recovered millions of dollars on behalf of his clients in the civil and workers’ compensation courts throughout New Jersey involving hundreds of claims, including products liability, construction site accident, motor vehicle, slip and fall, dog bite, and occupational exposure injuries, to name a few.  In addition to accident cases, Mr. Carton has appeared before numerous arbitrators and administrative law judges advocating on behalf of wrongfully terminated or mistreated workers.

A third-generation New Jersey attorney, Mr. Carton understands that every client deserves his personal attention, trust, and commitment.  Mr. Carton personally handles the matters entrusted to him by his injured clients, and works diligently to ensure that every case is prepared thoroughly and advocated aggressively, with due consideration to the special circumstances affecting the injured person and his or her family.  In addition to the monies he recovers for his injured clients, Mr. Carton regularly obtains medical treatment for injured workers that need particular attention and treatment.

Among his recent successes, Mr. Carton obtained a $400,000 jury verdict (settled on appeal for a confidential sum) on behalf of a plumber who suffered eye injuries due to a defectively designed drain cleaner.  This case was particularly satisfying as it involved a major chemical manufacturer that refused to acknowledge that its product was unreasonably dangerous–the jury found otherwise.  Mr. Carton also recently obtained a jury verdict and molded judgment of $109,620.97 for a carpenter who had suffered a torn meniscus due to his fall into an exposed dumb waiter shaft on a construction project.  This past Spring, Mr. Carton obtained settlements of $200,000 and $150,000 for persons injured as the result of falls on ice and a defective stairwell.  As co-counsel, he recently obtained settlements of $900,000 on behalf of a bus operator injured in a motor vehicle accident involving a truck, and an $850,000 settlement on behalf of an injured construction worker who fell from a scaffold at a Long Branch school construction project.  Mr. Carton has also obtained total disability awards resulting in hundreds of thousands of dollars, lifetime benefits, and follow-up medical care for injured workers.  Two such recent matters involved a fall from a scaffold on a residential construction project, and a worker who suffered chest pain due to verbal abuse at work leading to a hospital stay that subsequently caused a MRSA staph infection and endocarditis.

Mr. Carton is a 1996 graduate of the Seton Hall School of Law, where he served as Editor-in-Chief of the Seton Hall Law Review. He also served as a federal law clerk to the Honorable Alfred M. Wolin, U.S.D.J. (retired) from September 1998-1999, and as a law clerk to the Honorable Thomas F. Shebell, Jr., P.J.A.P. (retired) from September 1996-1997 in the New Jersey Appellate Division.  He is a graduate of the William J. Brennan, Jr. Inn of Court, and a member of the Monmouth County, Middlesex County, and New Jersey State bar associations.  He is a member of the American and New Jersey Association for Justice, organizations dedicated to preserving the right of injured individuals to seek redress from the courts for victims of negligence and other wrongful conduct.  He is a member of the New Jersey, New York, and District of Columbia bars, and is also admitted to practice before federal courts in New Jersey and New York.
